Sunrisers Hyderabad and Mumbai Indians had contrasting starts to their IPL 2018 campaigns this year. While SRH cruised to a nine-wicket victory in Hyderabad over Rajasthan Royals, Chennai Super Kings pulled off a grand heist to hand Mumbai a heart-breaking one-wicket loss.
Clinical were the Sunrisers against the Royals having all their boxes ticked. Their ground fielding was exceptional with them having saved at least 10-15 runs. Their five main bowlers came together in an effective amalgam to help restrict Rajasthan to a sub-par 125 on a wicket that at least had 150-160 in it. On a wicket that was assisting seamers, it was SRH’s fifth bowler, Siddharth Kaul, who led the way with figures of 2 for 17, before Shikhar Dhawan blazed through to an unbeaten half-century to take them over the line with skipper Kane Williamson for company.
Sunrisers also have a potent spin unit, with Rashid Khan and Shakib already having an impact in the game against Royals, but Mumbai’s middle order consists of players who can combat them. In Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav and brothers Krunal and Hardik Pandya, Mumbai have a batting order that could make for an absorbing contest against spin
struggling to get a move on. Both openers Rohit Sharma and Evin Lewis struggled, but their middle order in Ishan Kishan (40) and Suryakumar Yadav (43) stood up. But it was Krunal Pandya’s 22-ball 41 that really propelled them to 165 that brought them back into the game. Mumbai were even ahead in the contest reducing CSK to 118 for 8 at one stage with debutant Mayank Markande picking up three wickets, along with Hardik Pandya, to put the hosts in the driver’s seat.
1 Wriddhiman Saha (wk), 2 Shikhar Dhawan, 3 Kane Williamson (capt), 4 Manish Pandey, 5 Deepak Hooda, 6 Yusuf Pathan, 7 Shakib Al Hasan 8 Rashid Khan, 9 Bhuvneshwar Kumar 10 Billy Stanlake, 11 Siddarth Kaul
1 Evin Lewis, 2 Rohit Sharma (capt), 3 Ishan Kishan (wk), 4 Suryakumar Yadav, 5 Hardik Pandya, 6 Krunal Pandya, 7 Keiron Pollard, 8 Jasprit Bumrah 9 Mitchell McClenaghan 10 Mustafizur Rahman, 11 Mayank Markande
Head to head:
SRH 5 – 5 MI – Both teams stack equally when it comes to head-to-head stats so far in the competition, but it is at Hyderabad that the hosts lead Mumbai 3-2.
